Needless to say there will be celebrity reviews and opinions galore in
the coming days for this heartfelt memoir, and the unfortunate side
effects of possible sanctimonious scorn as well. She completely nails
the traditions, customs, nuances, the little quirks and endearing
qualities that are inherent to the orthodox Tamil Brahmin (Tambrahm)
community . It may seem quaint & amusing to the celebrity circles
she moves in, but a proud reality and tradition to Padma, and reading
that is an inspirational validation for those 'regular' folks that have
made the transition to being American.
As a food blogger focused on
the same cuisine Ms. Lakshmi grew up with and still cherishes, my
primary reason for purchase was the 'What we ate'. As I put my device
away after being transfixed to the book, I realize this memoir had fed
me something more deep - an inspiration to swim against the tide ,
churn the waters & rise with determination above the painful
chapters and aspects of life's journey. Be true to your inner self,
casting away the chains of 'culture' and myopic social mores. And yet,
in the end still retain the pure, the innocent and happy aspects of the
environment that brings oneself to their present juncture in life.
And yes, there's always a bowl of Thayir sadham at the end of the day to savor
